"Prior to finishing university and commencing my employment I had not heard of CILEx. I understood that the only (and most expensive way) to become a lawyer was to undertake the Law Society qualifications after your degree and try and obtain a full time training contract.
After 3 years of study and a whole lot of debt I was frustrated to find that I still required further studying (and more debt) and that qualification was not guaranteed as I was still required to obtain the elusive training contract.
Then a friend of mine advised me about CILEx. I was advised that as a law graduate I was able to become a lawyer without the need for a training contract. I therefore commenced my studies at the Law Academy in Liverpool. I undertook 6 modules to become a graduate Legal Executive and after 5 years employment* qualified to become a Chartered Legal Executive and have the letters FCILEx after my name.
Many law graduates are not aware that they can still qualify by becoming a Chartered Legal Executive and therefore achieve the same career progression as a solicitor. Chartered Legal Executives are now able to practice in their own right and become partners in law firms.
I am thankful that I became a Chartered Legal Executive and would encourage other law graduates to do the same. My firm actively encourage and support both law graduates and paralegals who wish to qualify as a Chartered Legal Executive.
In addition to this I am delighted to have been appointed as the Vice-Chair of the Liverpool branch of CILEx. As part of the committee I provide a link between students and head office and in addition to organising various social events, provide support and advice to students in the process of applying for fellowship."
