Liverpool Law Society honoured the firm of The Law Academy Graduate Kevin Donoghue at a glittering awards ceremony on Friday night, 15 May, 2015.
Kevin’s firm, Bootle-based Donoghue Solicitors, was awarded the coveted Niche Law Firm Award at the Liverpool Law Society Legal Awards.
The black-tie event, hosted by Radio Merseyside’s Roger Phillips, was attended by over 300 lawyers and their guests, including many other well-known people from the national legal profession.
The independent judging panel comprised of a leading Queens Counsel judge, a former past president of Liverpool Law Society, a law professor at John Moores University, and a city councillor. They selected Donoghue Solicitors ahead of the many eligible firms at which over 2,200 members are employed, saying:
“Donoghue Solicitors have developed a niche specialism in civil actions against the police. Their work covers complex areas of law and practice, frequently combining a range of personal injury, privacy and Human Rights issues.
“The judges were impressed with their commitment to working with clients who are seeking to attain justice and challenge misconduct. The cases frequently involve important issues of principle pertaining to client confidentiality and reputational damage.
“There is a clear and significant commitment to widening access to justice.”

For Kevin Donoghue and his team, the Niche Law Firm Award was a chance to say “thank you”. The firm’s guests that night included parents, grandparents, partners, and friends. He extended a special invitation to Sue Doyle, non-executive Director of The Law Academy, who said she felt “like royalty” at the event.
Kevin explained, “In 2010 I founded Donoghue Solicitors to specialise in compensation claims, and particularly civil actions against the police.
“But before that I studied with The Law Academy and qualified first as a Legal Executive before becoming a solicitor. During that time I learned a great deal from Sue about hard work, commitment, and loyalty. I will always be grateful to her and her staff for their help with my own career, so wanted her there to share the firm’s success.”
As well as qualifying himself with The Law Academy, Kevin is generously encouraging the next generation of lawyers to follow in his footsteps. He continued, “Earning legal qualifications while working full-time worked for me, and was a better alternative than the traditional university route.
“I am glad to offer the same opportunity to my staff. For anyone who is willing to commit to becoming a Legal Executive, I pay for their course fees and books, give them study and exam leave, and any help and advice they need.”
Kevin says this significant financial and time commitment is well worth it and benefits his staff, firm, and clients. “I firmly believe in education and giving people opportunities. Seeing my team earn their qualifications makes me immensely proud. And I am rewarded with a motivated, focussed workforce, who are dedicated to helping others get the compensation they deserve,” he said.
Everyone at The Law Academy congratulates Kevin and his team at Donoghue Solicitors and wishes them the very best for the future.
